The kitchen provided much sunlight during the day but was of little use to the Beales, since they only cooked meals upstairs in their bedroom. Nothing could be left out in the kitchen due to the numerous raccoons searching for food, including soap, which seemed to be a favorite for them. The freezer in the refrigerator did not work, which created a problem storing the Beales’ favorite treat, ice cream. Lois wrote that she used the small gas stove to heat water for coffee and expressed concern that the doors were about to fall off their hinges (Wright, 1978, p. 6). Additionally, the floor in the kitchen needed repair; it was sinking near the old coal stove named “Perfection” that had not been in use since the cleaning raid by the county (Wright, 1978, p. 19). Lois hung some of her artwork of colored vegetables in the kitchen to brighten the space. On July 14, 1976, Lois wrote in her journal about the state of the kitchen:

The kitchen didn’t look inviting with the two chairs and table moved against the wall. I noticed another hole in the ceiling near the light fixture. However, the Silver Cross painting was still over the old coal stove. The small gas stove wasn’t being used at all. There was nothing else in the room. It was empty.
